New Year's Day 2027 is on Friday, January 1. There are 91 days left. Below is a countdown GIF for your emails, in dark, light and transparent versions, set to midnight Eastern on New Year's Eve. For a year-end sale, point the same timer at the hour your offer closes instead.

New Year's Day 2027 falls on Friday, January 1, so New Year's Eve is Thursday, December 31. There are 91 days left. Below are three countdowns ready to copy, plus the generator already set to midnight in case you want other colors or, for a sale, another end time.
Two kinds of email count down to this date. A greeting counts to midnight itself. A year-end sale counts to whenever your offer closes, which is often earlier on the 31st.
Three countdowns ready to copy
Dark
Light
Transparent
Copying creates your timer: free, no signup and editable from this browser.
All three count down to January 1, 2027 at 12:00 a.m. Eastern. To count to the end of a sale instead, change the date and time in the generator before you copy the code.
Dark. Midnight blue background, white digits and a champagne accent in large blocks, for a dark party-style header.
Light. Cream background, near-black digits and a dark gold accent in rounded cells, for white or beige templates.
Transparent. Digits and labels with no background, so your template's color shows through. The digits are dark; switch them to white if your email is dark.
Copy the HTML if your ESP has a code block, or the URL if it only accepts images by link. All three styles are on the free plan.
Make your own
The generator is already set up for this page. Change what you need and press Create timer.

Midnight happens at a different moment for each reader
A fixed timer ends at one instant. If you count to midnight Eastern, readers in Los Angeles see zero at 9 p.m. on the 31st and readers in London at 5 a.m. on New Year's Day. For a sale that's fine, as long as the copy says "ends at midnight ET".
For a greeting that should reach zero at each reader's own midnight, make one timer per time zone in the generator and send each version to a segment of your list built on location. It takes a few extra minutes and avoids a "Happy New Year!" that arrives three hours early.
Fixed date or evergreen
A fixed-date timer suits both uses on this page, because midnight and the end of your sale are the same instant for the whole list.
An evergreen timer counts a set duration from each person's open. Without a paid account it starts over on every open, which makes it wrong for a sale that really closes on December 31. On the Starter plan it runs per recipient: the first open sets the start and later opens show what remains. That fits a January welcome flow, for example a 72 hour discount for people who join your list after the holidays.

Each person gets their own window from their first open
If your December started with gift shipping deadlines, the Christmas countdown covers that stretch.
Nonprofits have their own deadline on the 31st. For U.S. donors, the IRS counts a gift in the year it is made, and a credit card gift in the year it is charged, so a year-end appeal can count down to December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Our GivingTuesday countdown covers the campaign that usually comes first.
Mistakes to avoid on New Year's Eve
Copying last year's timer. A timer reused from a previous campaign may still point at January 1, 2026. A deadline in the past shows the end message from the first open, so check the year before you send.
A greeting as the end of a sale. If the sale timer ends with "Happy New Year!", someone who opens the email on January 2 gets a cheerful message and no sign that the offer is gone. Use "Our year-end sale has ended" or hide the timer at zero.
Apple Mail and early downloads. Mail Privacy Protection fetches images in the background when the email arrives, whether or not anyone opens it. A last-day email delivered at 8 a.m. and read at 4 p.m. may show the 8 a.m. count. Put the end time in the text so the reader never depends on the image alone.
Changing the end time. If you extend the sale into January 1, edit the timer. Emails you've already sent will show the new end, because the image is generated on every open.
Paste it into your ESP
Any platform that accepts an HTML block or an image by URL will work. Our guides for Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot and Shopify Email show where the block lives and how to preview it.
Send a test to a Gmail and an Outlook address before you schedule anything for the 31st.
Common questions
What day is New Year's Day 2027?
Friday, January 1, 2027. It's a federal holiday in the U.S. New Year's Eve falls on Thursday, December 31, 2026.
Can one countdown hit zero at midnight in every time zone?
No. A fixed timer ends at a single instant for everyone, so midnight Eastern is 9 p.m. in Los Angeles and 5 a.m. in London. To reach zero at each reader's midnight, create one timer per zone and send each version to the subscribers in that zone.
When should a year-end sale end?
At a time your team can support. If customer service is off on the night of December 31, ending the sale that afternoon means someone is there to answer the last orders. Whatever you choose, write the date, time and zone in the copy next to the timer.
What happens when it reaches zero?
The GIF shows the message you wrote for the end, such as Happy New Year! or Our year-end sale has ended, or a 1 pixel transparent image if you'd rather it disappear.
Will Outlook show the animation?
Microsoft says Outlook for Microsoft 365, 2021 and 2024 play animated GIFs by default. With Windows animations turned off, or in Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013, readers see the first frame, and in our GIF that frame already shows the time left at open.
Is there a watermark?
No. A free timer has no branding up to 25,000 impressions a month. Above that, a small line of text appears under the countdown. Paid plans never show it.
